At my core, I have always had a concern for others. Given my analytical and detail oriented brain, my early career as a pharmacist was an obvious way for me to be of service to others. In order to fulfill my imaginative and creative side I turned to the arts and dedicated another huge part of my life to pursue a parallel career in music. My awakening to my ultimate calling came on a fortuitous trip to NYC in 2005 when I was opened up to the possibility of combining the full spectrum of my talents and abilities.
I was visiting my sister, who was working in the city Albert Einstein Hospital, Bronx at the time, so that I could prepare for, what then seemed like the most important interviews of my life. I was applying for candidacy to PhD programs in St. Louis and Pittsburgh. As beautiful and inspiring as New York is, I was only there for the convenience of its location. Little did I know, this would turn out to be the place where I had one of THE MOST TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE.
On a serendipitous rainy day, my sister and I had ducked into a coffee shop for quick shelter when we were offered a chance to have two weeks of unlimited yoga classes for $20. I made the most out of that already good deal and went every day for the next couple of weeks. Some days I even went twice. I kept getting pulled back. After my interviews, meeting esteemed professors, offering me opportunities of a lifetime, I found myself weighed down with a lump in my stomach rather than the delight I should have been experiencing.
Having my new yoga habit to rely on, I found myself back at the studio. I took the next available class which turned out to be an overly crowded meditation session. I hadn’t tried it before and I was skeptical at finding any kind of peace in the sea of people but miraculously I did. NOT ONLY DID I FIND SPACE IN MY HEAD, I ALSO FOUND A CALM IN MY SOUL. My feelings of discomfort and uncertainty had been building throughout this trip, and as our yogi guided us through the meditation, I felt myself lifting out of my being and unburdening myself from the accumulated strain and stress that had been literally weighing down my body. I had never felt anything like it. It was simultaneously frightening and exhilarating. THE SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE WAS IMMEDIATE AND I WAS AWOKEN TO A NEW STATE OF EXISTENCE.
As I progressed through the meditation I had a breakthrough that continues to propel me in my journey. I took this new found purpose and wove it into my life as a pharmacist and musician upon my return to Turkey. I didn’t pursue the PhDs in either St. Louis or Pittsburgh, choosing instead to DEEPEN MY SPIRITUAL CONNECTION in Turkey. I met 2 mentors who, like me, were in the medical field, provided me with philosophical and spiritual resources like books, training, and networks. Most critical was the guidance they provided.
To have these two people in my life at the start helped to point me in the right direction and their encouragement helped me stay motivated throughout my training. I have certificates from multiple workshops and I worked in one of the most famous Personal Improvement/Spirituality Centers in Ankara for 3 months as a translator. This exposed me to new branches in eastern teachings such as SUFISM, KUNDALINI practices,SHAMANIC trainings, PRANIC HEALING sessions, Tantric and Osho meditations etc. I also completed 4 levels of Norbekov trainings which combines eastern and western techniques.
THESE SPIRITUAL TRAININGS HELPED ME TO FINDBALANCE IN MY WORK LIFE but it also had positive repercussions on my personal life. The clarity it gave me helped me to seize on opportunities and visualize the next stages of my life. I met my now husband and joined him in Boston. Getting married and moving to Boston wasn’t just the start of a new chapter, it was a brand new book. I had to re-learn many things as is expected when adapting to a new environment. While in this survival mode, I made conscious efforts to keep my personal growth practices going and it has paid off. I can now share the totality of my gifts and enlightenment with others who find themselves at crossroads and guide them towards achieving a more meaningful life.
